THE STUDIO

Aux Abris (pronounced OHS ABREE) is a boutique design studio specializing in exquisite, textured wallpapers. Our collections are printed on paperbacked grasscloths, silks, linens, woven papers, and other innovative materials, offering a rich sensory experience.

Inspired by early 20th-century art movements like the Bauhaus, French Modernism, and Art Nouveau, our collection reimagines timeless designs for modern interiors, pushing the boundaries of texture, color, and pattern. We invite you to bring your wit and imagination to create unconventional spaces with us, supported by our short lead times and extensive customization options.

The studio consists of a dedicated team handling printing, design, and sampling in our 7,000-square-foot space outside of New York City in the Yonkers artist district. We pay meticulous attention to quality and offer unmatched flexibility for customization: we can adjust scale, color, or texture to fit your vision. Our designs can also be translated into durable Type II vinyl for high-traffic or damp areas. For commercial projects, we provide gravure printing for high-volume production at competitive prices.

Panoramic murals are our specialty, elevated to an art form. Adapting large-scale panoramas to the height of your room is a craft we’ve honed with precision and creativity. Each mural is custom-fitted to your space, with proportions carefully adjusted for a seamless look.

Our goal is to help you bring your imagination to life. Please contact one of our many showrooms for sampling or information on how to place an order.

THE FOUNDER

Aux Abris was founded in 2015 by interior decorator and graphic designer Karen Robert. Driven by a passion for interiors, she launched the brand to incorporate her own wallpaper designs into her projects—a natural culmination of her many creative pursuits.

Robert’s artistic journey began in childhood with painting, but her design sensibility was shaped by years spent modelling in Milan, and attending school in Paris. After graduation from Columbia University she moved to London where she studied antique furniture at Sotheby’s and explored gilding, antique restoration, and graphic design before ultimately finding her calling in interior design. Upon returning to New York with her husband and four children, her work evolved into a full-fledged wallpaper business.

Karen’s many years living abroad shaped a warm and collected aesthetic and infused in her the art of creating interiors. She gravitates toward well-worn spaces infused with quirky modern touches, bold color, rich textures, and dynamic patterns. The name “Aux Abris,” meaning “take shelter,” is a tribute to both her vacation home on Shelter Island and her French- American husband whom she met while living in Paris. And yes, her name is pronounced the french way!
